YTHS Haiku Guidelines for Submission to the Poets’ Pages
One of the tenets of haiku aesthetics that the Yuki Teikei Society honors is the use of a poetic device known as kigo, or season words, in English language haiku. Although haiku can be written without the use of kigo, its use is encouraged because it usually makes a stronger haiku.
The preferred form for haiku is three lines of short/long/short although haiku can be written in four, two, or one line(s), as well. The form for a haiku incorporated in a haiga would, of course, be dictated by the visual effect.
Mechanics of Submitting Haiku
- Members may submit as many entries as they like, but we will be accepting at most ten (10) from each submitting author.
- Works may be published or unpublished. Submit citations for published work.
- Include “YTHS Haiku” in your subject heading.
- Copyright to all work published on yths.org remains with the contributing author/artist, and no haiku may be copied, reproduced or republished without their written permission. Artists and authors are free to republish work.
Submission by email is preferred. Email to the Web Minder David Sherertz (ddsherertz@gmail.com). For “non-digital” members, submit haiku, no more than three per printed page (with a stamped self-addressed envelope, if you wish them to be returned), to the Web Minder:
