Michael Sheffield

Michael Sheffield

mysteriously
through morning mist
the arrival of spring
boulevard plums
a flurry of petals
in the fast lane
ancient love song . . .
how the orchid opens its throat
to receive the bee
morning
a beach house empties
into summer
primordial forest
a woodpecker taps
into eternity
summer’s end
next year’s blossom
in the daylily root
autumn loneliness —
over the dunes spent blossoms
scatter in the wind
winter pear
with one slice
the worm is made homeless
withered figs
these hands that have plucked
so much fruit
cracked tea bowl
the stirring of antiquity
in my bones
